Native of Asia, the orange tree was slowly introduced into the Mediterranean Basin. The orange tree flower was the favorite fragrance of King Louis XIV, known as the « Sun King » (1638 – 1715). Louis XIV had a great sensitivity for smells. His personal perfumer, Martial, created a perfume for him for each day of the week. According to the French writer Saint-Simon, the King overused musky perfumes so much so that by the end of his reign « he could not bear any, except for the odor of the orange flower ». The monarch's original taste foretold the trend of natural fresh scents which was to be very much « en vogue » in the XVIIIth century.
