In Andalusia, el duende is an untranslatable notion, designating a state of trance in which flamenco artists allow their darkest, most vulnerable side to express itself. It’s a paroxysm of expressiveness and resonance with the audience, of sincere creativity in all its quivering glory. Federico Garcia Lorca called duende “the mysterious power that everyone feels and that no philosopher can explain."
